Vaginal PRP for Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is an extremely common complaint for women.  It often starts after childbearing and only gets worse as we age.  There are two different types of urinary incontinence: the most common type is “stress incontinence” (leaking with stress like bending, sneezing, coughing etc) . The second type is called “urge incontinence” (bladder spasms and urgency to “get to the bathroom quickly”) . The treatment options of these two types vary. Depending on the type of incontinence you have, your doctor has probably recommended pelvic floor exercises called “kegels”, life style modifications like decreasing your fluid intake, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and stopping fluids by 7pm.  For some, pelvic floor rehab is the answer, others manage with medications, and for some the treatment is surgery.  And for many women, there is no effective treatment at all and we are left praying we won’t have an accident , or we are stuck  wearing pads and panty liners every day.

However, there IS a new treatment option in the form of vaginal PRP available at Women’s Care Florida , and we are proud to offer this to you. Dr. Michelle Rothen became interested in the benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma several years ago and is very excited to offer it as a part of her practice now.  Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been used in many different fields of medicine for decades. It is used in Dermatology, Aesthetics, in Wound Care, Orthopedics, Urology and Gynecology.  It has been found very useful as a non-medication and non-surgical treatment option for many different types of incontinence including both stress and urgency incontinence.  It is a quick and easy procedure that can be done in our office by a board certified Gynecologist.  It usually takes effect within 3-8 weeks and patients often feel the effects for 9 months to a year, some even longer.  In fact, 95% of women will report a significant improvement or even complete resolution in their urinary symptoms.

How does the procedure work?   We begin with a consultation.  That lets us get to know each other.  We go over your medical history in detail and make sure that you are a candidate for vaginal PRP.  We discuss the procedure in detail and go over all of your questions, concerns and expectations.

When you come back, we will start by drawing your own blood.  We then spin your  blood and extract the platelet rich plasma (PRP) which we inject back into your vaginal tissue.  The PRP is injected with a very small needle and it is virtually pain free for most patients.

After about 3-8weeks the PRP starts to take effect.  The platelets and growth factors will recruit stem cells to the area, increase blood flow and naturally rejuvenate and heal the tissue.  Does it work?  Absolutely ……for almost everyone!  95% of women report a tremendous improvement in their urinary incontinence!  That’s worth trying and we look forward to seeing  you soon.

Don’t Wait Another Minute.

Should I have a Mammogram during a Pandemic?

It is "Pink October" once again, but this time it comes with a pandemic. We all have been so stressed out and preoccupied with so many other worries for the past 7 months, that we have been neglecting our routine screenings.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that delayed diagnoses due to the pandemic could result in 10,000 additional deaths from breast and colorectal cancers in the next 10 years.

The healthcare community has seen that many patients are fearful to go to medical facilities and hospitals over concerns of catching an illness. The result is a delay in care and the possibility of diagnosing cancer at a later stage.

So, what should you do? You should certainly seek an immediate evaluation from your doctor if you have ANY of these breast symptoms:

-nipple discharge

-redness or warmth

-lump or pain

If you are a healthy individual, especially if you are under the age of 65, you should be seeing your healthcare providers like you normally do each year. If you are at high risk for complications of Covid, you may be able to have a virtual visit with your doctor to see what the next step should be.

Most healthcare facilities are taking extra precautions to keep patients safe. At our office, we are: questioning all those entering the building, enforcing wearing a mask, sterilizing all surfaces and equipment after each patient, and adhering to social distancing.

We are available to perform your mammogram at our Clay Street office location Monday through Friday. It is typically a quick 15 minute procedure performed by the mammography technician, and read remotely by the board certified radiologist. Call 407-644-5371 to schedule your appointment.
